Francesco Paolo Michetti (1851-1929) must be recognized as one of the key figures in the Italian and international art scene of the late 19th and early 20th centuries due to the uniqueness of his long, complex career, which evolved over time, developing different techniques and styles. Studies conducted in the past twenty years, which have shed light on his versatility and extraordinary ease of execution and invention, have emphasized the need for a scientific review of his vast and successful body of work, particularly to distinguish what he truly created from what is attributable to the prolific activity of numerous forgers and imitators.
The result of ten years of work, this catalogue, curated by Fabio Benzi, Gianluca Berardi, Teresa Sacchi Lodispoto, and Sabrina Spinazzè, serves as an essential critical tool, establishing the corpus of his paintings and graphic works, and retracing, through the introductory essays, Michetti’s human and artistic trajectory, marked by prestigious commissions, honors, and national and international successes. While Naples, Paris, and Rome are the three cornerstones of his path to recognition, Abruzzo, nestled between mountains and the sea, serves as his primary source of inspiration. Its nature and people are the protagonists of a great cyclical and symbolic poem of life and death, which unfolds over time and, despite the evolution of form, always strives to penetrate the essence of reality.
